Amritsar, July 14 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Expressing his gratitude to state government for approving the ambitious education project of Khalsa University in Amritsar, Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC)) President Mr. Satyajit Singh Majithia today appealed the political parties to restraint from playing `petty politics’ on the ambitious education project. He chided the select politicians who are raking up non-issues concerning the new varsity in the state and added that it would be seat of higher learning and research and boon for border districts of state.
He thanked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal for the decision to approve the varsity in the last cabinet meeting and thus made the dreams of 1890 established KCGC’s founders dream to have a University, realized. He said the KU will be `professional, multi-faculty, world-class university’ with aim to generate employment and human resource to compete at international level. “We will tie up with the world universities for education and research in diverse fields of studies’’, said Mr. Majithia.
Taking a jibe at some political leaders for making `misleading and misconceived’ statement for political reasons, senior Majithia said he is surprised at the assertions by some opposition leaders who he said seems to be `misled and ill-informed’ on the subject. He said not only that the country and especially Punjab need more universities to be opened up as per UGC prospective agendas which seeks 1700 universities in country by 2020 while there are only 770 universities today. “Thus, we need more varsities in the country for providing boost to the higher education’’, said he.
He was astonished that some leaders are playing mischief by saying the that the heritage of Khalsa College will be undermined. “Who is tampering with the heritage of iconic Khalsa College? This is not only being protected as heritage building by management but its independent status as an autonomous College, centre of excellence status and A grade by NAAC has been ensured under the present management and it will maintain its independent status’’, said he. He said College’s contribution under the management had been tremendous for the last 124 years since its inception in 1892.
Mr. Majithia reiterated that Khalsa College management is committed to protect Khalsa College as autonomous College and KU is coming up at a separate piece of land away from the College, on the Ram Tirath Road while College stands tall and magnificent on GT Road. He said certain `vested interests’ are against the KU and select politicians are playing into the hands of these commercial entities who do not want a university to be set up by credible body like KCGC.
Majithia said that the KU will be managed by democratically elected management and would focus on job-oriented, futuristic courses to enable the students to earn respectful livelihoods and turn spiritual human beings with focus on value-based education. He said KCGC which is a charitable body, running 18 educational institutions including historic Khalsa College has already has vast experience in managing institutions of higher learning. He said KCGC opened 10 institutions including the nine professional colleges in last 12 years which speaks volumes about the aim of the charitable body to spread higher education
