Amritsar, March 27 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) successfully organized UGC-DRS sponsored “National Seminar on Environmental Conservation and Health” in which Prof. PV Sivapullaiah, Pro-VC, Gitam University, Bangalore and UGC advisor inaugurated the Seminar. Prof. Avinash Nagpal, Dean Life Sciences gave brief introduction about the seminar and the DRS programme of the Department followed by introduction to key note speaker by Prof. Renu Bhardwaj. Prof. A.K. Thukral, Former Director Research delivered the presidential address. Prof. Satwinderjeet Kaur, head of the Department told that eminent scientists including Prof. Anita Mukherjee from the Deptt. Botany, University of Calcutta, Kolkata discussed about the ecogenotoxicity of nanomaterials at different trophic levels; Prof. Yashpal Sharma ,Head, Department of Botany, Jammu University focused on the importance of several wild edible mushrooms used as myco-food and traditional recipes in North West Himalaya of Jammu and Kashmir.
Prof. Ravindra Raina from Dr.YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan highlighted the importance of medicinal plants and stressed upon the need for their conservation and cultivation. Dr. Daljeet Singh, a renowned botanist from the region shared his views on socio-economic role of medicinal plants and shared his practical experiences regarding the use of these plants in cases of diabetes, bone diseases etc. Prof.Saroj Arora passed vote of thanks. Dr. A.S Soodan, Dr.A.P.Vig, Dr.Rajinder, Dr. Jatinder Kaur were present during the deliberations.
