Amritsar, Oct. 10 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Enjoining children with community needs and realities, Delhi Public School, Amritsar set up an example for educational institutes to follow, celebrating “The Joy of Giving” Festival week. Walking in the footsteps set by Father of the Nation -Mahatma Gandhi and the ‘langar’ tradition that the holy city of Amritsar is famous for, hundreds of students in batches of 40 each distributed and shared their breakfast with students of Government High School, Bandala. The village school has been formally adopted by Delhi Public School a few years back and this is part of the commitment to the school, stated member of the DPS School Management Mr Aakash Khandelwal, who organized the festival for students of class I to V.
On the occasion, DPS Principal Mrs Sangeeta Singh said – “Students must learn sharing and giving. Moral science lessons prevalent in the past, were bookish, here we want to connect the children with the real world, the under-privileged and make them feel one with them. This is true education where there is that immense feeling of joy experienced in the act of giving and bringing a smile upon someone’s face”. The celebration of giving was under the aegis of “Daan Utsav” a programme on philanthropy started in 2009. The programme inspires students do a simple act of a small donation to a charity, a less fortunate or a meal for them and alternately spending time volunteering for a cause. “In other words it could be – money, time, resources or skills that one gifts another. The festival was to encourage children to do random acts of kindness or help someone in need”, said Mr Khandelwal.
It was interesting to see school students collect slips from students of village school on the “One wish, gift to be fulfilled on Diwali”. DPS students left the villages school’s children not only with a hearty meal of fruit, juice, snack and sandwiches that they relished immensely but also with twinkling eyes of joy and delight.
