

Asal Uttar (Tarn Taran) Sept. 9 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Golden Jubilee Celebrations of 1965 India-Pakistan War was organized by the State Government of Punjab on the occasion of ‘Asal Uttar’ day on Sept. 9 to commemorate and honour the sacrifices of our martyrs and veterans for their gallant acts on the battle filed during war. Asal Uttar is also known as the ‘Graveyard of Pakistan Patton Tanks’, as it was here that Pakistan lost 75 tanks on 9th Sept. 1965. Army assisted in organizing a weapon and equipment display for the event. Shri Prakash Singh Badal, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Punjab was the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by a number of other state ministers on the occasion. Lieutenant General KJ Singh, General Officer Commanding in Chief , Western Command and Lieutenant General JS Cheema, General Officer Commanding Vajra Corps alongwith General Officer Commanding, Golden Arrow Division also graced the occasion.
The function commenced with wreath laying at the war memorial of CQMH Abdul Hamid, Param Vir Chakra (Posthumous) by the Hon’ble Chief Guest and Lieutenant General KJ Singh, at Asal Uttar. The Hon’ble Chief Minister then inaugurated the Rally and Weapon Display and flagged in Army Cycle Expedition at Amarkot in the presence of approximately 1200 war veterans, 130 Veer Naris (War Widows) and an audience of about 15000. The Army displayed various war equipment such as Tanks, Armoured Personnel Carriers, Artillery Guns, Air Defence Guns and other small arms and equipment of the Infantry. The exhibition displayed various battle actions of both J&K and Punjab sectors, where the war was fought.
The War Veterans and Veer Naris were felicitated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister with momentos, shawls and cash awards. Mrs Anita Singh, Regional President AWWA, Western Command also interacted with the Veer Naris on the occasion.
