Seminar on Climatic Change and Agriculture Held at Khalsa College

PPN2212201513Amritsar, Dec. 22 (Dharmender Singh Rataul) – The impact of the climatic change is widespread and most visible on the agriculture and if drastic and adaptive measures were not taken, the very survival of crops on our planet would be in danger. These were the deliberations held during a seminar on `Climatic Change and Adaptive Strategies in Agriculture’, organized at Khalsa College here today. The agriculture scientist from Punjab Agriculture University (PAU) Dr. Prabhjot Kaur and Dr. Parampal Kaur stressed that the temperature is rising on the earth and it would have direct affect on the crops. He said the vegetation would be adversely affected if the temperature continue rising. “Already the signs are visible and rising temperature is affecting the produce per acre of the crops and its quality too’’, said Dr. Prabhjot Kaur. Dr. Parampal said that the green houses gases and rising carbon emission is giving rise to global temperature, rising sea level which will affect the agriculture patterns. “We are no surprised if these climatic changes leads to more famines, floods and natural disasters leading to human migrations and the very life on the earth is in danger’’, said she. Dr. Dinesh Singh from Indian Council of Agriculture Research, Karnal and Dr. Parveen Kumar from Indian Saline Soil Institute, Karnal also addressed the audience and gave detailed view of the climatic changes and its impact on the agriculture in whole of the South Asian and Indian sub continent. The seminar was organized by the Agriculture department of the historic College. Principal Dr. Mehal Singh, Khalsa College Governing Council joint secretary Farms Rajbir Singh and head of department Dr. Randeep Kaur Bal earlier welcomed the experts on their arrival and said that there is debate going on at the world level on the issue. “The challenge of climatic change is huge and accordingly the measures to be taken needed to be giant’’, said Dr.Mehal Singh. Dr. Bal said the aim of the seminar was to initiate discussion and dialogues on the significant issue. Prof Gurdev Singh, Prof.Satnam Singh, Dr.Gurbax Singh, Prof Navtej, Prof Narinderdeep, Rakesh Kumar, Kanwaljit were present.
