Jalandhar, July 1 (Punjab Post Bureau)- Adding to the golden era of the Punjab Regiment the youngest Battalion of the oldest Regiment namely “30th Battalion The Punjab Regiment” has been raised under the aegis of The Punjab Regimental Centre on 01 Jul 2016 at Ramgarh Cantt (Jharkhand).
The Punjab Regiment is one of the oldest regiment in the Indian Army. The first battalion was raised in 1761 as Coastal Sepoys. The regiment is the only land force in the world with a naval (Galley) insignia. “The Galley” was awarded to 69th Punjabis (later 2nd PUNJAB) in recognition of the readiness to serve overseas, after the battalion had fought in eight overseas campaigns by 1824, despite it being a religious taboo at that time.
The raising was marked by the unfurling of the battalions’ regimental flag in the presence of the Brigadier GPS Sisodiya, Commandant The Punjab Regimental Centre, Col SC Kandpal, battalion’s first Commanding Officer, Sub Maj Lakhwinder Singh, Unit officers, Junior Commissioned Officers & Other Ranks.
