Demands start of direct Amritsar-London flight by Air India
Amritsar, June 7 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Amritsar Vikas Manch (AVM) an NGO working for the betterment of the city in general and increased air connectivity with other international destinations in particular, met with Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment Vijay Sampla at Hoshiarpur. Manch executive members thanked the minister for start of Amritsar-Birmingham flight by Air India. Memorandum was given to the Minister to request the Central government for start of direct Amritsar to London & Toronto flights by Air India. Manch also requested Minister Sampla to take up the matter of allowing International carriers from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Kuwait, Turkey, China and other countries for flying to Amritsar with the Ministry of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Ministry of Civil Aviation including Minister Suresh Prabhu. Airlines from these countries are currently blocked from flying to the city for not having bilateral air agreements.
AVM shared with the minister that foreign carriers including Fly Dubai responded to the letters written by the Manch saying Amritsar is a very important and key market that they would like to serve. However, till the time Amritsar is not added in the air agreements, they cannot fly here. If these carriers are allowed to fly from here, it will connect Amritsar with hundreds of destinations in Europe and North America.
Minister Sampla told the Manch members that he is already aware of the demand for Amritsar-London flights. Regarding air agreements, he will discuss the matter with Ministry of External Affairs and Civil Aviation. Manch executive members that met the minister included General Secretary Manjit Singh Saini, Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, Manmohan Singh, Daljit Singh Kohli and Nirmal Singh Anand.
