`Teej’ celebrated at historic Khalsa KCA after a decade

Amritsar, August 8 ( Dharminer Rataul )- After over a decade, the festival of (Tiyaan)`Teej’ was celebrated with much fervor and festivity by the girl students of Khalsa College Amritsar (KCA). It was a gala time for the students as they resorted to traditional Punjabi dance, music apart from eating delicacies and enjoying the swings and merry go around put up specially on the vast college campus. The girls were joined by faculty members while Principal Dr.Mehal Singh said they were celebrating the festival on campus after a long gap of ten years. He said it was a matter of pride that 122 years old college has more girl students than the boys, which is first time in the history of the college, established in 1892. “The number of girl students have grown manifold. It is obvious that we are celebrating festival of Teej’’, said he. The students recited `Bolian’ (folk singing) and performed `Gidda’ to welcome the month of `Savana’ as the intermittent rain enhanced the spirit of the festivity. The girls wearing the colourful dresses danced to the beats of Dhol, though with changing times the modern pop music songs blend with the traditions during the festival. “It is a festival of happiness and good times and it is heartening to see the celebration of girl power’’, said Dr. Mehal Singh.“We are happy that the festival was organized at the campus at such a large scale. The traditional Punjabi food and swings added to the colour that is all around during this event today’’, said Harpreet Kaur, a student.
