Amritsar, December 15 (Punjab Post Bureau)- A “Four-Week Orientation Programme-100” was inaugurated on December 15, 2016 at the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre of Guru Nanak Dev University. As many as 48 University and College teachers pertaining to a variety of disciplines from different states of the country are participating in this Programme.
Prof. S.S. Gill, former Vice-Chancellor, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot was the Chief Guest. Prof. Gill in his inaugural address emphasized the role of education for the development of any society in all respects. All the stakeholders will have to get their act together in streamlining the education, particularly the primary education, in order to bring about the required change, he said. And sooner, the better, he emphasized. Citing the eample of Kerala, the State with the highest literacy in the country, he impressed upon the need to take a leaf out of its book and to do the needful in this regard.
Advising the teaching community not to confine themselves only to the classroom, but also to discharge the duties of a ‘Social Leader’ as well, he enlisted the various challenges being confronted by our society at present. And the teachers, being enlightened section of the society will have to rise to the occasion to graple these challenges firmly, he stressed. The cirricula, syllabi of today need to be revised periodically in consonance with the requirements of the society at large, so that the real purpose of education is achieved in the true sense of the word, he continued. Concluding his inaugural address, he opined that the real aim of the education is not ony to produce employable, enterprising graduates, but also quality human beings.
Prof. Amarjit Singh Sidhu, Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, in his welcome address exhorted the participants to make an optimum use of this opportunity to augment their expertise, knowledge, competence etc. He described this moment as the memorable one as this is the 100th Orientation Program which is a rare feat in the history of out HRDC, as well as our University. One of the major aims of such Programmes is also to promote mutual understanding, social harmony, integration amongst the participants from the diverse linguistic, geographical, cultural, social, religious backgrounds together, which, he described as one of the dire needs of the hour in our times. Earlier, the Chief Guest was accorded a floral welcome by Prof. Amarjit Singh Sidhu and Dr. Mohan Kumar. Dr. Mohan Kumar proposed the vote of thanks.
