Amritsar, August 1 (Punjab Post Bureau) – A workshop on awareness for ’Training of women and dairy farmers for the management of cattle dung and kitchen waste through vermicomposting’ was organized in the Department of Botanical and Environment Sciences of the Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar. This workshop was organized under the aegis of project sanctioned under Mission Tandrust Punjab by Directorate of Environmental and Climate Change (DECC), Punjab to Dr. Saroj Arora, Professor, Department of Botanical and Environment Sciences. The participants included Finish Society (NGO), farmers from 65 Quilla diary complexes, women self help group associated with IKEA foundation and FINILOOP NGO and research scholars of the University.
The resource person of the event, Dr. Jaswinder Singh Bhatia, Farmer Training Centre, Khalsa College, Amritsar delivered an expert lecture on establishing vermicomposting units and its management. He stressed upon the management of kitchen and dairy wastes by vermicomposing. The hands- on- training was also imparted to participants in the vermicompost unit in the Botanical garden of the university. Mr. Ajay Kumar, project fellow, under Mission Tandrust Punjab explained the process and steps of vermicomposting in detail and showed videos. Mr. Sarabjeet Singh, Farmer, 65 Quilla, Amritsar shared his experience and gratitude for the vermicompost unit established by Guru Nanak Dev University under the project.
The women and the farmers actively participated in the discussion session and promised to cooperate and install the vermicompost units as well as disseminate the message of organic farming to other farmers of their nearby areas for making this as source of income. Ms Devi Rani shared her experience in solid waste management and appreciated the efforts of organizing team to organize this workshop. All the faculty members as well as non teaching staff of the department were present in the event. Prof. Jaswinder Singh from Khalsa Collge Amritsar, Prof. Rajinder Kaur, Prof. Satwinderjeet Kaur, Prof. Jatinder Kaur, Dr. Astha Bhatia and other faculty members of the Department also participated in the event.
