Amritsar, March 24 ( Paritam Singh)- The experts who deliberated upon various issues concerning Indian democracy during seminar on “Indian Federalism and Its Working With Special Reference to Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir” at Khalsa College today sought strong federalism for strengthening democracy. They said that autonomy to the states was must for making Indian democracy workable.The seminar was organized by Post-Graduate Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the College and sponsored by Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR). Prof. S.S. Narang in his key note address spoke about different movements in Punjab for state autonomy. He also stressed upon addressing the contemporary challenges and centre-state relations. Prof. Kuldip Singh from Department of Political Science GNDU highlighted the institutional decline during Indira Gandhi’s regime which led to centralization. Prof. Baljit Singh from Department of Political Science, Jammu University, Jammu, argued in favour of accommodating diversities in building federalism and nation-building. The valedictory session was presided over by Prof. J. S. Sekhon, Head, Department of Political Science, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, in his concluding remarks, he observed that in the light of new economic reforms the nature of federal system has undergone a change, he also stressed on the significance of the role of state leadership in making full use of federal provisions of the constitution. KCA Principal Dr. Daljit Singh, Principal, while thanking the key speakers and delegates, observed that Federalism and Democracy go hand in hand. Prof. (Mrs.) Jaspreet Kaur, Prof. Devender Singh, Dr. Ranjit Singh, Prof. Sukhjit Singh, Dr. Gurvel Singh Malhi and Prof. Kirandeep Kaur and students were present.
