Sustainable use of Genetic Resources Essential for Long term prosperity of society- Dr. Paramjit Singh

PPN2903201720Amritsar, March 29 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Dr. Paramjit Singh, Director, Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Calcutta addressed the students and faculty members of Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences at the National seminar on “Environmental Conservation and Health” in the Guru Nanak Dev University. Dr. Satwinderjeet Kaur, Professor and Head of the Department told that Dr. Paramjit Singh discussed about the efforts of BSI in conservation of flora and fauna of North-Eastern states of India. BSI comprises of Indian botanic garden, Howrah; Central National Herbarium, Howrah; Central botanical Laboratory, Howrah and Industrial section, Indian Museum, Kolkata which seeks to generate constructive dialogue between conservation organizations, cooperation agencies and institutions to develop investment mechanisms and projects to protect natural resources and ecosystems. Dr. Singh told that BSI has launched various programs, aiming to promote the restoration, conservation and protection of ecosystems and biodiversity of India. He added that biodiversity is the foundation of life on Earth, and therefore sustains economic activity and human welfare, and that conserving and sustainably using genetic resources, species and ecosystems is essential for the long-term prosperity and viability of society.

He also emphasized on mangrove vegetation of India and importance of Sunder bans, West Bengal (one of the largest mangrove echo regions in the globe and also a UNESCO World heritage site). Dr. Singh made the audience know about the role of BSI in conserving the natural plant species of Sunder bans which have become endangered recently. In addition, he told about the natural and manmade hazards to the biodiversity in that particular area. Eminents scientists including Prof. Sher Ali from Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi, Dr. Yash Pal, Head Botany Department, Jammu University, Prof. Anita Mukherjee, Department of Botany University of Calcutta, Dr. Ravinder Raina, Y.S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, Prof. A. K. Thukral, Prof. Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Dean Life Sciences, Prof. Renu Bhardwaj, Prof. Saroj Arora, Dr. A. S. Soodan, Dr. A. P. Vig, Dr. Rajinder Kaur; Dr. Jatinder Kaur participated in the deliberations of the Seminar.
