
Amritsar Nov. 24 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, former Jathedar, Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Dr. Furqan Qamar, Secretary General, Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi and Prof. S.S. Johl, Chancellor, Central University of Bathinda delivered their academic lectures on “Teachings of Guru Nanak and present scenario of education” on 47th foundation day of Guru Nanak Dev University. These lectures were held in the Guru Nanak Bhawan Auditorium of the University. A large number of dignitaries, teachers, employees and students were present. Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.S. Brar welcomed the guest speakers and other guests. He also highlighted the achievements of the University. Prof. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Registrar coordinated the foundation day activities and Prof. Navdeep Singh Tung, Dean, Academic Affairs of the University proposed vote of thanks.
The day-long celebrations began with the Bhog Sri Akhand Path at the University Gurdwara Sahib followed by the Shabad Kirtan by Bhai Kamaljit Singh, Hazoori Ragi, Sri Darbar Sahib. Guru Ka Langar was servered on this occasion. In the evening, a hockey match was organized in the Guru Hargobind Hockey Stadium and a special Kirtan Darbar was held in the evening at Sri Gurdwara Sahib of the University. Deepmala was also organized in the University. Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti said that it is matter of joy that Guru Nanak Dev University is fulfilling its commitment enshrined in the objective of its establishment. He said that so far University has produced a large number of academicians, sportsmen and artists of International repute who brought laurels to the University. He said that Guru Nanak Dev ji gives the message of Universal brotherhood while worshiping God. He said that Gurmukhi Lipi is complete and a blessing to humanity, and we need to understand and interpret this lipi.
Dr. Furqan Qamar said that higher education is important for any nation. He said that educated masses could create a healthy society and contribute in the development of Nation. “Universities are the knowledge creating nodes and we need to make sincere efforts for the development of Universities. Privatization and commercialization of education are the biggest challenges. Budget on higher education and affordability of education to masses, providing good quality education are major challenges”, said Dr. Qamar.
Prof. Johl, in his address, said that he is associated with this University since its inception and seen all aspects of its development. “I am happy that with the able guidance of Prof. Brar, this University has progressed and is financially sound”. He cited his concern regarding weak foundation of education at school level and wide gap between private and govt. schools in terms of faculty, infrastructure and education. He advised the policy makers to establish state level commission with totally biasfree nominees as members to monitor the education standards. He said that we should be proud to be Indian irrespective of our region, location, cast etc. as Guru ji always spread the message of Universal brotherhood.
A painting competition was also organized on November 22 as part of these celebrations and the winners were honored by the guests. In this competition, Gurvinder Singh, student of APEEJAY College of Jalandhar stood first while Divesh Kumar from the same college remained second and Amandeep Singh of Khalsa College of Education, Ranjit Avenue, Amritsar bagged third position. The speakers congratulated Vice-Chancellor for his dynamism and academic leadership. Academicians, scholars, students and eminent personalities of the city participated in these celebrations and had Guru Ka Langar together with others arranged by the University. Prof. Brar honored the guest speakers with books and mementos.
