Amritsar, March 5 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Department of Botany DAV College organized “Popular Biotechnology Lecture Series” today. The event was organized in collaboration with Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh and was sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India. About 300 students and faculty members of life sciences discipline from various colleges of the region attended the series. The lectures were organized to bring awareness about the basic concepts, recent advances and applications of biotechnology.
Dr. Daizy Sharma, Head, Department of Botany welcomed the resource persons and the participants. Speaking on occasion, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Principal of the college emphasized the importance of biotechnology in solving many problems like stagnating food production, increasing soil salinity and finding cure for many diseases. Dr. Alkesh, Senior Scientific Officer (Biotechnology), Punjab State council for Science and Technology gave an overview of the technological solutions for Bioenergy production and highlighted the importance of biomass as an important environmentally friendly fuel of the future.
Dr. S.K Soni, Professor of Microbiology at Panjab University, Chandigarh spoke on the technology for management of biodegradable municipal solid waste for generation of befouls. Dr G.S Kocher, Professor of Microbiology at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana talked about microbiological implications in bioconversion of agricultural wastes into ethanol and also listed the challenges for optimizing the process.
The lectures generated a lot of interest among the participants and they actively participated in elaborate question answer session after the lectures. Prof. Amanjot Kaur proposed the vote of thanks to the Guests. Dr. Ashish Gupta, Dr. Rajni Khanna, Dr. Vikas Gupta, Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Prof Renu Chauhan, Prof Nihita Sharma, Dr. Neeraj Gupta, Prof. Mehak Khosla and Prof Pooja Sharma were also present during the event.
