Amritsar, March 1 (Punjab Post Bureau) — Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders from the Majha region led by Revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia today lauded Union finance minister Arun Jaitely for his continued benevolence to the Majha region, saying this was for the first time in decades that the border area had got its due in the Union budget for two consecutive years. The leaders, including Chief parliamentary secretaries Virsa Singh Valtoha, Harmeet Singh Sandhu and Inderbir Singh Bolaria, said last year Mr Jaitely had allocated funds and included the holy city in the National heritage city development project besides allocating an IIM to Amritsar. “This year too the Union finance minister has continued to show his commitment to ensure development of Amritsar by announcing upgradation of facilities at the Jallianwala Bagh besides establishment of a post graduate institute of Horticulture research”, the leaders said.
Speaking about the measures announced for Amritsar, Mr Majithia said upgradation of the Jallianwala Bagh as a cultural and heritage centre by going in for ultra modern landscaping, signage, restoration and creation of an interpretation centre would catapult Amritsar into the international tourism map. He said similarly establishment of a Horticulture research institute in the region would give a much needed boost to diversification. Mr Majithia said the continued measures being taken by Mr Jaitely to usher in a new wave of development in the border belt was proof of his concern to ensure the discrimination meted out to this region in the earlier decade long UPA rule was finally out to an end. The leaders also congratulated Mr Jaitely for the other measures announced for Punjab including establishment of an AIIMS for Punjab besides the focus on agriculture and social welfare. “Such pro people measures have brought the focus back on growth after an era of corruption, scams and scandal raj”, they added.
