Amritsar, 17 November (Punjab Post Bureau)- Local Government Minister Anil Joshi has issued directions to Urban Local Bodies to work in an efficient and transparent manner for the people of the state.

In a communication to the Commissioners and Executive Officers of all ULBs, he desired that as a lot of activity is going on under their jurisdiction on all fronts like development and repair of roads, laying of new roads/ sewer lines, augmentation of water supply and sanitation etc. It has been generally seen that whenever there any road cuts etc are there and man hole covers etc are to be fixed, the work is not done/supervised with the required diligence on the part of officials as well as the contractors to whom this job is allotted and on majority of occasions these man hole covers are not put properly and at times allowed to remain open and road cuts not repaired/maintained properly warranting accidents. With this the general public is put to a lot of inconvenience, which can be avoided with seriousness and a pro-active attitude of staff towards such maintenance components of taking timely action for covering naked electricity wires/man holes, water supply pipes leakage and pruning of shrubs/trees and road cuts and timely maintenance of street lights etc.

The Minister ordered that directions be issued to the contractors and staff undertaking/supervising such routine activities and that they be motivated and made aware of their responsibilities towards public to avoid any untoward incidents and make their respective city a model city. With such initiatives the people are more likely to have confidence in the local government and feel that local government will act in the community’s overall interest.
