
Amritsar, October 22 (Punjab Post Bureau)- A new first for the Holy City will be the launch of Organic Sundays on 23 October. This family fun Sunday event for the citizens of Amritsar shall be hosted by Shahzada Nand College, Green Avenue, in the heart of the city. Farmers from across Punjab who do not use toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers shall arrive on Sunday morning bringing with them farm fresh vegetables & fruit, milk, traditional items made from gur & jaggery, cold pressed oils, grains and pulses as also a basketful of warmth for Amritsar. The event shall be from 10am to 2pm.
Joining them will be producers of home use products that are biodegradable & earth friendly at one end, as Well as packers of edible eatables who use only inputs purchased from such natural farmers. All visitors are Being requested to bring along cloth bags to the venue for their purchases as plastic bags will be taboo. Otherwise They can purchase cloth bags which will last them for many months and reduce the plastic burden.
EcoAmritsar Project Administrator Gurjit Singh said , “We have been taking farmers from various Villages to model nature farms for Master classes & workshops for some time now. Organic Sundays is an initiative to bring together inspired organic farmers from across Punjab for an interaction with the enlightened consumers and industry at a market place. Our effort is to make this connection to ensure good health to the citizens & a boost to the farm economy.”
Gunbir Singh who chairs Dilbir Foundation & EcoAmritsar while appreciating the collaboration of stakeholders and Institutions stated, “Punjab’s soil and waters are laden with chemicals, agricultural productivity is stagnant and farm incomes Inadequate. The farmer needs alternatives to paddy production which the country needs no more. On the other hand The excessive use of toxic inputs have taken a huge toll on the health of both the consumer and the producer. Our this effort is a humble initiative towards a possible solution, but its sustainability is subject to the response from The thinking citizens of the city. I am sure that we all value the health of our families as also would gather to motivate noble farmers.
