Amritsar, July 29 (Punjab Post Bureau)- The students of DAV Public School, Lawrence Road , Amritsar paid homage to Shaheed Udham Singh on his death anniversary which falls on 31st July. He was one of the foremost freedom fighter who fought against the British rule in India . The students saluted him for his immense courage and conviction to see the country free from the shackles of the britishers. They read out about his childhood and his struggle in life as before the age of seven, he lost his parents. The fateful day of Baisakhi i.e 13th April, 1919, when a peaceful assembly of people was fired upon by General Dyer , was a turning point in his life. The screams and helplessness of the people there left him sleepless and he pledged to take revenge. The long waited moment at last came on 13th March , 1940 when in the Caxton Hall a meeting of East India Association was being held. There Udham Singh fired six Shots at Sir Michael O’ Dyer, who was the governor of Punjab when the Massacre took place, and was arrested and the trial began. Udham Singh was influenced by Bhagat Singh and his revolutionary group and joined the agitation in full swing. After the trial , he was given death sentence and was hanged on 31st July , 1942. On this occasion, the students sang patriotic songs and in the end pledged to serve the nation with the same conviction and sincerity.
Regional Director , Punjab Zone – A , Dr. (Mrs.) Neelam Kamra and the Manager of the school, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Principal DAV College Amritsar asked the students to remember the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters. They added that true homage to them would be to stand for justice and fight against all evils to bring harmony in the society.
Dr. Neera Sharma Principal of the school said that we must always keep in mind that the foundation of our freedom was laid on the sacrifices of many great leaders, freedom fighters and brave hearts like Shaheed Udham Singh. She advised the students to work hard to realise the dream of these patriots.
