Webinar on Cervical Cancer Awareness organized

Amritsar, October 6 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Phulkari CAN, the philanthropic wing of Phulkari WOA, a leading women’s organisation of Amritsar & Guru Nanak Dev University conducted an Online National Webinar on Cervical Cancer Awareness under its Conquer Cancer program. More than 500 people were made aware of the simple measures that can be adopted to prevent this 100% percent preventable cancer. The webinar was very well attended by representation from various Universities around India including Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Maharshtra, Rajasthan, MP, UP, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh etc.

            The session was presented by Dr. Madhu Yadav, Head of Programs CAPED & moderated by Dr. Richa Thaman, Program Head, Conquer Cancer, Phulkari CAN. Dr. Sunil Kumar Nodal Officer EOC-PWD Guru Nanak Dev University was instrumental in reaching out to the various Universities, country wide & the audience included professors and students from these Universities. He introduced the activities and objectives of the EOC-PWD’s. 

            Dr. Hardeep Singh Professor & Head, Department of Computer Science and Dean, Students Welfare of the University lauded the efforts of Phulkari CAN & said Cervical Cancer is perhaps one of the least known forms of cancer. It is fast spreading and is poised to assume mammoth proportions if not properly tackled on emergent basis. The society needs to be educated about the various aspects of this disease. 

He said that Phulkari Can group is spearheading this campaign to spread awareness about this deadly form of cancer & equally gladden to note that GNDU is also a partner to Phulkari Can in this endeavor. The efforts put in by all the members of this group and Dr. Sunil from GNDU and his team, are really praiseworthy. He said that his best wishes for all the future activities.The credit for this & more, must go to the ladies of Phulkari Amritsar with its subsidiary “Phulkari CAN.” 

            Phulkari CAN commenced its drive to eradicate Cervical Cancer in Punjab in September, 2018 along with knowledge partner, CAPED. Conquer Cancer Program heads, Dr. Rashmi Vij, Priyanka Goel, Dr. Richa Thaman & Neeru Gupta are instrumental in carrying on a unique method of operation, through which the sessions make ordinary citizens into citizens who care about and give back to society.

            PhulkariCAN has successfully organised 47 awareness sessions at several prestigious institutions of Amritsar & Jalandhar and has brought 1,82,000 people under the umbrella of Cervical Cancer Awareness. About 200 underprivileged women have been provided free Cervical Cancer screening. 

            Nidhi Sindhwani, the President of Phulkari CAN said, “ These unusual times have not affected our resolve to fulfil our mission. We continue our work through online awareness sessions to ensure social distancing.”

            Phulkari CAN also runs programs to educate underprivileged children, create environmental awareness & establish libraries. It attracts the youth & women of the city in its fold to engage in activities dedicated to giving back to society. Since the onset of Covid19, it has provided essentials to the needy & vulnerable sections impacted by the pandemic. Phulkari CAN, through Conquer Cancer, continues to work towards fulfilling its grand dream of seeing Punjab become the first Cervical Cancer free state of Punjab.
