Amritsar, April 9 (Punjab Post Bureau)- Deeply concerned about issues on environment degradation, Delhi Public School on its premises introduced Two bin-system in classrooms. The school held  an in-depth workshop on easy ways of solid and liquid waste management in the homes and beyond. This included identifying and evaluation of waste as biodegradable and non- bio-degradable resource. The workshop –‘Convert garbage into gold’ was conducted by renowned environmentalist Mr C. Srinivasan, who appeared in an episode of ‘Don’t waste your Garbage’ on SATYAMEV JAYATE- a Television serial on social responsibility, anchored by star actor Aamir Khan.

Going a step further in this endeavor of keeping alive the “Swachh Bharat” programme, the school laid a foundation of a SLRM (solid & liquid resource management) Centre, in its premises that was inaugurated by the chief guest Mr. Surinder Singh Jt. Commissioner Municipal Corporation Amritsar (MCA) in the presence of special guest  Dr. Ajay Kanwar – Medical Officer, M.C. A. with school principal Mrs  Sangeeta Singh.

During the workshop Mr Srinivasan with his simple formulas got the students excited with the prospect of cleaning up environment besides  earning from it by using animals, birds, amphibians, bovines  and earthworms as its day and night workers.   He called it a Vellore Model of waste management, that was successfully running in that south Indian city.

Thus during the workshop, he talked about chalking out a retirement plan for cows, buffaloes and other grass eating domestic animals that had stopped giving milk and are often abandoned by diaries. These bovines can be used as waste managers. “You pick up the fresh waste from mandis or vegetable and fruit markets and feed them to these animals who are bio digestors and by evening you have a readymade processed fecal matter. The fecal matter can be slushed and used immediately while the solid can be the fodder for earthworms who can create the gold of “vermin-compost”. Thus in less than 72 hours your vegetable waste is ready for use to give organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers using minimum space for the entire process.”

Explaining it further he said –“Morning workers are hens and cocks. Any rotten food if put in container attracts maggots and the rotten food is eaten by maggots and maggots are eaten by the hen giving fecal matter that is another great manure as also its egg production increases.

Similarly, “for managing and banishing the terrible smell from a fish market, put the ducks to work. They happily eat the fish waste in minutes and again give fabulous fecal matter besides a higher production of duck eggs.”

The environmentalist said he had prepared a master plan wherein small sites even in urban areas can be used to manage wastes and make it useful and so meaningful to human existence, besides which the ‘Swachh Bharat “ programme can come true in less than one and a half years. The clean environment plan works on the formula of 3- Rs’ -“Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”. Students enjoyed a garbage game to understand the concept of primary segregation. The first batch of Green ambassadors was launched with students of the Enviro Club of Delhi Public School, who were given badges and green caps and a pledge ceremony was held.

Principal for the school said –“ the idea was to encourage students to be well informed about various types of waste generated in the school. Their adverse effects on health, environment and the aesthetics of the school and to learn Environment friendly methods of waste reduction and more effective disposal system.” Explain further she said –“SLRM is an interlinking concept to utilize the abundant existing natural resources to tackle the immediate issue of garbage management and to channelized usage of high efficient man and animal world powers to solving the twin issues of waste management and unemployment.” Trees were planted on the periphery of the football ground of the school by the guests on the occasion.
