5 days workshop on “Learning Self-Defence Techniques for Girls” begins

Patiala, April 18 (Punjab Post Bureau)- Women’s Studies Centre, Punjabi University, Patiala in Collaboration with Department of  Physcial Educacation initiated 5 days workshop on “Learning Self-Defence Techniques for Girls” from 18^th April to 22nd April, 2016 in the Indoor Stadium, Directorate of Sports, Punjabi University, Patiala.

Dr. Jaspal Singh, Vice Chancellor inaugurated the workshop and said that for any society to progress and develop in the true sense, women folk must be self sufficient and strong enough to thwart criminal actions against them. He further said that mental alertness as well as physical fitness is required to develop their personality. He applauded the Women’s Studies Centre and Department of Physical Education for initiating such workshop. He opined that attitudinal change at the family level can go a long way in bringing social change.

Dr. Ritu Lehal, Director Women’s Studies Centre addressed the participants and said that proficiency in self-defence is the need of the hour for all the girls. Keeping in view the poor law and order situation in the society. She further said that girls must raise their level of confidence and be self sufficient to  handle odd situations. She also elaborated upon certain preventive measures like usage of technology and toll free helplines.

Students from Department of Physical Education gave a live demo of aerobics exercises necessary for the physical well being. Various issues related to physical torture and harassment faced by women and girls were demonstrated through a short play presented by the students which highlighted the need for such self defence techniques.

Dr. Amritpal Kaur, Dean Students welfare, Dr. Balwinder Tiwana , Director Planning and Monitoring, Dr. Daisy Walia, Dr. Balwinder Kaur Bhatti, Dr. Pushipinder Dhillon, Dr. Ravneet Kaur, Additional Provost Girls, Ms. Madhu, Dr. Sangeeta Nagaich, Dr. Manjit Singh and faculty members of University School of Appllied Management were also present on the occasion. Dr. Nishan Singh Deol, Head Departement of Physical Education presented vote of thanks. Dr. Baljinder Singh , Assitant Prof. conducted the inaugural session.
