Amritsar, Dec 22 (Punjab Post Bureau) – The Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences of the Guru 
Nanak Dev University organized an academic lecture by Prof. Ramesh Goel, Graduate Director, Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, USA on 18 Dec 2019.
Prof. Goel delivered a talk on “Municipal Wastewater Treatment-Past, Current and Future under the changing Paradigm”. He emphasized that wastewater has a potential resource for energy recovery using anerobic treatment and proper reuse of wastewater leads to saving of underground water. In USA, more than 80% water is treated and reused for various activities. Advanced wastewater treatment is need of the hour in which nitrogen and phosphorous is removed along with carbon from the wastewater.
Prof. Goel explained reactor design for wastewater treatment and also talked about patented technologies like Anamox for removal of both carbon and nitrogen from the wastewater. He said that their lab was involved in disinfection of wastewater by optimization of chlorine dose and ultraviolet treatment for removal of drugs present in the wastewater. He also emphasized the drug resistant bacteria which are present in the municipal wastewater.
The event was attended by the faculty and students of life sciences departments of GNDU. Dr Rajbir Bhatti from Pharmaceutical Sciences coordinated the event and Dr. M.S. Bhatti, Head of Department introduced the speaker, Prof. Renu Bhardwaj gave the presidential address and Prof. Avinash Kaur Nagpal presented the vote of thanks. Prof. Saroj Arora, Prof. Satwinderjeet Kaur, Prof. Adarsh Pal Vig, Dr A S Soodan, Dr Jatinder Kaur, Dr Rajinder Kaur, Prof. Ashwani Luthra were present on this occasion.
Prof. Goel was honoured by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu in presence of Dean, Academic Affairs, Prof. S S Behl and Registrar of the university Prof. K S Kahlon.
