GNDU – First University to get Special Education (Multiple Disabilities) Course in North India

Amritsar, September 15 (Punjab Post Bureau) – Department of Education Guru Nanak Dev University is the first institute to run Special Education (Multiple Disabilities) course in Punjab and neighbouring states of North India which will produce Special Teachers to look after the needs of children with multiple disabilities. Government of Punjab is paying special emphasis to appoint special educators in each school either affiliated with PSEB or CBSE to provide special care to the children with disabilities.

Rehabilitation Council of India Ministry of Education New Delhi has approved B.Ed. Special Education (Multiple Disabilities) to Department of Education Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar from the session 2021-22 with an intake capacity of 30 seats. This course aims at developing teachers for differently abled children and for creating inclusive environment in the schools. In the present times, there is a shift from special schools to inclusive settings and at the same time a dearth of trained special educators leading to gaps in realising inclusion in its true spirit. As per the guidelines of CBSE, it is mandatory to have special educators in all schools and this course would definitely help to prepare teachers who can assume the role of counsellors and special educators in the schools giving impetus to the vision of achieving inclusion as well as opening the doors of employment to the young trained graduates. For effective running of the course, the university has already signed an MOU with a Special School (Pehal Resource Centre Karampura) and Inclusive School (Govt. Sen. Sec. School Karampura)

The inspirational force behind this new venture is Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Jaspal Singh Sandhu who has always played a pro-active role in taking initiatives and steering the thought process of the faculty and students in a new direction. Prof. Sandhu was very keen from the beginning to start this course in the university as it would help the schools of the border region in meeting the requirements of Special Educators in every school and also helps the differently abled children to get assistance and specialised services from the trained educators.
