Asian Silver Medalist Khushbir reaches her College to a rousing Reception

Says despite odds of poverty and muscle pain she sailed through Asian Games

Amritsar, October 6 (Dharminder Rataul)- The students, fellow players and sympathizers today lined up to shower, rose petals and praises as Asian silver medalist Khushbir Kaur who has done India proud by earning honour in the Asian Games,  held at Incheon (South Korea), today arrived at her Khalsa College for Women (KCW). She arrived at the local railway station earlier from where she was brought to the College riding an open jeep with whole college teachers, staff and students thronging to accord a warm welcome.

“I am overwhelmed by my victory. At least I could play my part to bring the honour for the country’’, she said in an emotional tone as she explained that despite the odds of the poverty in which her family is living in and a muscle pull injury, she was able to sail through. “I belong to very moderate family. But still due to wishes and financial support from various quarters I was able to reach Asian Games’’, she stated adding that she suffered with a muscle pull injury a year back and once thought she might not even be able to participate in games.

A student of MA, Khushbir won the Silver in the Asian in the Walk competition. She has become first Indian women to win the medal in the category of Long Walk. She completed her 20 kilometers Walk in one hour and 33 minutes to bag the medal. An athlete par excellence, she belongs to Nikka Rasulpur village near Chowk Mehta in this district and hit the headlines when she scored Silver in Aisad. “That was a moment of glory. I felt on the clouds when I saw the tri-colour flying high in front of my eyes’’, she stated. She said she would continue her practice and her target is now to bring glory for the country in the next Olympics.

KCW Principal Dr.Sukhbir Kaur Mahal, her coaches and fellow students welcomed her and they all broke to Bhangra dance on the tune of `Dhol’. They held her in arms and said they were doing and would continue extending financial and emotional help to her to take on the upcoming Olympics. Khushbir meanwhile thanked Khalsa Colleeg Governign Council (KCGC), Principal Dr. Mahal, her sports in charge Sukhdeep Kaur, Coaches Baldev Singh and Rankirat Singh and family for support.
